Detroit restaurant features candidate-themed burgers on Iowa caucus night

Bobcat Bonnie's is one of the best new restaurants in Detroit, Michigan. The Michigan primary is still more than a month away, but voters here are keeping an eye on the Iowa caucus. The owners of Bobcat Bonnie’s are getting in on the act with three featured burgers for tonight’s Burger Night.

Almost every Monday night is Burger Night, which means three special burgers specifically for that night’s menu at a special price with fries and a beer. This is tonight’s Burger Night selection:

Ted Cruz's Great Southern Burger: Spicy BBQ Sauce, Smoked Beef Brisket, Brussel [sic] Coleslaw, 1/2 Pound Angus Beef Burger, Brioche Bun.

Hilary's [sic] Great American Burger: Chili, Cheddar Cheese, Diced Onion, Relish, Ketchup, Mustard, 1/2 Pound Angus Beef Burger, Brioche Bun.

Donald Trump's Nightmare Burger: Tortilla Strips, Avocado Salsa, Queso, Shredded Lettuce and Cabbage, 1/2 Pound Angus Beef Burger, Brioche Bun.

“Where’s Bernie Sanders?” asked a customer who was looking at the menu just as I was paying my tab. That was when the Iowa caucus countdown clock still had two hours left on it. On the restaurant’s Facebook page, a customer suggested “the veggie option should be the Bernie.”

As far as I can tell, Bernie Sanders is not vegan nor at least vegetarian, but he does have a very good track record on animal rights. I also made a suggestion for a Bernie burger, and I’m sure other customers will also.

I admit I was leery of the Trump burger. “I’m sure it’s delicious, but Donald Trump doesn’t deserve it,” I said to the waitress. But once I actually read the description, I saw that ordering it would by no means be an endorsement of Adolf Trump. So that’s what I ordered and indeed it was very delicious.

By the way, I know for a fact that the restaurant owners shop at Honey Bee Market regularly. Honey Bee has a very good selection of tortillas and tortilla chips, so it’s very likely that’s where they got the tortilla chips for the Trump burger.

Perhaps the Ted Cruz burger should have included Canadian bacon. As for the Hillary Clinton burger, I guess I would have done without the onions if I had ordered it, but that’s just my taste. I wonder which burger will turn out to be the most popular at the end of the night?

As for the Iowa caucus, it looks like Trump, Cruz, Clinton and Sanders will all remain in contention regardless of who wins. “Still very much alive,” Alex Trebek would probably say. But Jim Gilmore and Martin O’Who? will almost certainly have to bow out.
